Personality:
Kanji Tatsumi is a difficult person for many to understand, pegging him as a simple thug. During his childhood, he hid his thoughts and feelings behind a mask of stereotypical manliness due to the constant teasing of the females around him. This spawned from the arts and crafts hobbies that he enjoys so much, as well as his insecurities about his late father. He built up a strong shield for himself against the world, one of aggressiveness and intimidation. Although that is what most individuals of Inaba perceive him as, this is hardly the case. If given a chance, he will prove himself more than just a mindless punk, but unfortunately very few are willing to give him such an opportunity.
Whilst he is quick to react with threats, insults, and implied violence to any situation, he is capable of stopping and thinking about the impact his actions could have on others. He does have a very sensitive side also, but he rarely shows this to other people. This is kept only for people he truly trusts and feels at ease with - but finds it difficult regardless to talk about things on a personal level, even with close friends and family. Kanji is surprisingly thoughtful and considerate, but awkward and uncomfortable with expressing it - as he is similarly clumsy with his own feelings and issues. However, he is very loyal and protective, and once he feels like he can trust a person, he will do all he can not to let them down.
While very creatively-minded, Kanji is not known for his intelligence - sometimes being completely oblivious or inattentive to what's going on. Often entire conversations will go completely over his head - but despite not being particularly quick or intellectual, he does have a good heart deep down, in spite of his loud and vulgar mouth. He cares strongly for his widowed mother, who describes him as "stupid and short-tempered, but a strong and gentle child". He regrets being a burden on her due to the reputation he's built up and the attitude that reinforces it. He is a hard worker, helping his mother at their textile shop, and will challenge anyone who sullies his name or family’s reputation.
He has a strong sense of justice, and much of the rumours surrounding him are misinterpreted attempts to stop bullying or harassment, getting him pigeonholed with those he can't stand himself, such as the biker gangs he decimates single-handedly. Cutting school and getting into fights with both the law and the lawless don't help his situation, either.
Kanji is unsure about his sexuality, and the way his feelings and emotions affect him only heighten the facade he puts up to others. To avoid being noticed for having doubts about who he is and being cast out because of it, he massively plays up his tough guy image to hide his uncertainty of his identity. However, he avoids his perceived tormentors - the majority of which are girls, leading to more confusion on his part.
History:
As a child, Kanji already began to set himself apart from his male peers. He would play house rather than catch, and preferred home ec over P.E., naturally leaving him associating with young girls. It didn't become problematic until later on in his life.
Due to the close business relationship of Tatsumi Textiles and the Amagi Inn, Kanji was familiar with Yukiko Amagi when they were children, but eventually drifted apart, most likely around the same time Kanji lost his father.
His father collapsed one day early on, with the young Kanji only being able to see him hours after he was hospitalized. He died, but not before leaving Kanji with his last words. "If you're a man, you have to become strong."
Kanji took these words to heart, albeit in the wrong way, thinking his father wasn't proud of him.
Being raised by a single mother on the streets of Inaba was no easy task - especially when his mother happened to be the owner of the shop located within their home. She was unable to help Kanji through his struggles, despite trying her best to be a good mother. As childhood transitioned into teenage years, Kanji found himself to be the center of attention for other girls - but not in the way that he was used to in his younger years. It was negative, biting, sarcastic, disgusted - and Kanji felt alone.
With the memory of his father's parting thoughts, and the ostracization from the females of his age group, Kanji underwent a drastic change. He bleached his hair, got piercings, began to wear more unconventional clothes. He would start fights and push people away, keeping them at a distance so he wouldn't have a chance to be rejected by anyone. He wanted to be a man who could stand on his own two feet, and to him that meant being tough and not needing anyone. As well, he began to repress his more creative hobbies and interests, though he still invested time in them privately.
He was often seen as a imposing figure, a member of a "biker gang" starting from junior high school onwards, and a formidable opponent had anyone gathered the courage to face him. Although some aspects of these rumors were entirely false, people of Inaba wouldn't open their minds to a troubled teen.
But as our teenage years are our formative ones, and the most unstable yet defining, Kanji would eventually start to change after entering high school.
