A loud rhythmic beeping filled the ears of Tohru Adachi as he stood completely still in the middle of the doorway. His face was blank, void of all emotion as he gaze settled on the figure sleeping peacefully on the white-blanketed bed; oblivious to the guest they’d just received. The sharp aroma of rubbing alcohol and bleach cut at his throat and lungs as he inhaled, making them burn and his eyes water. Nothing about the environment seemed real, nothing was right. It was as if someone had taken everything he’d come to know over the past few weeks and turned it upside down. If he hadn’t known better, he would have guessed it was all a dream—a nightmare.
Stepping forward, he allowed the door to swing shut behind him, closing him off from the sounds of doctors and nurses moving about in the hallways and approached the bed. His stomach writhed violently, as his features twisted painfully and a soft gasp escaped his lips. Without warning, Adachi’s legs suddenly weakened and he collapsed beside the bed, his hands gripping at the sheets as he tried to steady himself. His chest tightened again as he looked at the face of the person slumbering before him, and suddenly, it felt as if something huge had caught itself in his throat. The brunette grasped his neck, choking as he struggled to inhale and fight back against the sudden pressure that had started to build, unable to stop a soft whimper from escaping.
This feeling… he wondered, biting his lip stubbornly as he slowly pushed himself to his feet and collapsed into the chair beside the bed. Is it… guilt?
Licking his lips, which suddenly felt to dry, Adachi cleared his throat and laughed softly. “Good afternoon, Dojima-san.” The smile that crossed his lips was forced as the choking sensation started to return. His fingers were spasming on his knee, fighting against him as his hand forced its way over to the bed, settling awkwardly atop the others as he looked down at the floor. “Ahaha, it’s boring at work without you, you know. I got two cups of coffee this morning. The chief started scolding me because it was a waste and—”
This wasn’t supposed to happen… he thought as he continued to talk. About his day, about work, about everything and anything he could think of, fighting to keep his voice even the entire time.
I didn’t plan on hurting her, she wasn’t part of the plan, I don’t know what happened. I just… suddenly lost control. Everything was going so well, and then this. This unexpected…
“And Sorohara did the most ridiculous thing. I mean really, he needs to give that newbie a break. Sanada-san seems like he’s trying really hard to do well at his job—which reminds me. There’s a girl with him now. I think her last name was Arisato. They’re both under Sonohara, but I think they’re dating in secret. I walked in on them in the copy room the other day and—”
I never wanted you to end up this far in. You were just supposed to investigate from the outside. Just watch. Follow my false clues and… stay out of the way.
“Man, if they ever got caught…”
It wasn’t supposed to be you.
“But I guess I’ll just have to wait for you to wake me up to scold me for that. I really need to be careful when I carry the coffee. I’ll be sure to retype those files for you though.”
I’m so sorry…
