Personality:
Chie is above all things a bright, cheerful, and loyal girl. It's the image that she puts forth, it's what everyone sees, and it's what people come to expect from her. She's almost always got a kind smile for friends and strangers alike, and it doesn't take much for her to stop and ask if someone needs help with something, whether it's an old man trying to get a heavy stereo into the back of his car, or a little girl who's lost a kitten. It's not that she's actively trying to be a good person- that's just who she is and how she operates. To not offer to help someone in need would be going against her very nature. She thrives on being able to make life better or easier for other people, on doing what she considers to be 'right'. When she doesn't do so, even if she has a good reason or is on her way to do something important, like, say, saving the world, she feels horrible, sick to her stomach, like she's less of who she was before.
Of course, being human, that's not the only facet to her personality. Chie spends a lot of the time that she's not with her friends on her own, even in her own house, and that can get pretty lonely. She, like many people her age, has bursts of depression and feelings of worthlessness, like she's not doing all that she could be. She worries sometimes that her friends don't really like her the way that she is, that they are, maybe, just using her need to protect them to their own benefit.
However, she does her best to power through these feelings, and usually doesn't let them bring her down. In terms of relationships, she tends to just not think about them. No boyfriend? Who needs one! She doesn't need to be hit on by guys to feel validated as a woman... even if sometimes it would be nice...
History:
Chie Satonaka's parents were a young, newly-wed couple- a man who had been in a car crash, who walked with a limp and winced whenever his knee brushed something, and a pale, ghostly woman who always seemed to be ill with one thing or another. The doctors were worried all through the pregnancy- with as weak as the woman seemed, it was likely that something would go wrong, that there would be some kind of a complication. She was determined, though, and through eight painful hours of labor, brought the perfect, healthy little girl into the world. But she wasn't satisfied. She loved her daughter, spent hours brushing her silky hair when it grew long enough, braiding fake flowers delicately into the tresses, always hugging and cuddling her daughter... but she wanted, truly, a son.
Chie never wanted for anything. They weren't a rich family, by far, but then, she wasn't a materialistic girl, either. She was loved by her mother, got to play with her father, had friends at school- who wouldn't like such a charismatic girl? It was only as she got older that she began to realize the significance of the hospital visits, of the long months of her mother's slowly growing belly, of the disappearance of the girth. The doctors told her to stop trying, but she refused.
The loud, brash girl was careful at home, tiptoeing around her mother and father, avoiding the quiet, desperate pleading, the angry insistance that enough was enough. It wasn't her place. Her place was doing schoolwork, or curling up on the couch to watch martial arts movies with her father, or making tea for her increasingly bed-bound mother. Outside of her house, nothing changed, but inwardly, she ached every time her teacher kindly asked about her mother's condition, or someone whispered about the newest tragedy, and oh, how hard it must be on poor Satonaka-chan.
She spent less and less time at home, more and more time out, pretending she was in one of those movies. It became her escape, 'martial arts', and her father even showed her some of the moves, though it was only on the rare, rare occasion that he wasn't in pain that it happened. She made up her own way of 'fighting', and the transition from playfighting to real fighting was almost seamless. It happened one day at school, some older boys picking on a couple of younger girls, and Chie couldn't have stopped herself even if she wanted to. She'd stood in front of them, and when the largest one had pushed her shoulder, her leg had snapped out, catching him across the side.
Her shin bruised, and her parents scolded her, but her heart felt light and free. This was it, this was what she needed to do! She needed to protect the innocent, the weak, those that couldn't protect themselves! It quickly became known that Chie wouldn't stand for bullies, and when she was seen coming, all harrassment stopped. No one wanted to get beaten up by someone smaller than them.
Meeting Yukiko was the second biggest event of her life, her offer to take the puppy home cementing their friendship in the way only the simplest acts can. They were great friends, and Chie had never been happier, even with her mother's increasingly dangerous attempts to have a son. She was like a woman possessed, and the last attempt almost succeeded. Chie was fourteen and bright and happy and worried on the inside, and the newest addition to their family was Hidetoshi, a tiny, frail baby with weak lungs and a wispy cry.
He died within the week.
That was the end of that, and life seemed to fall into a dull, predictable routine. Go to school. Spend time with Yukiko. Go home, feed the dog, make dinner while Papa was at work and Mama was out with friends, or, rather, her support group in the closest nearby city. Do homework, watch a movie, go to bed. Wake up, rinse, repeat, until the day the new transfer student came from the big city. His name was Yosuke, and he was... well. He was from the big city, and kind of really cool in a really dorky way... and he asked Yukiko out.
Everyone did.
With limited interaction with this new kid, she remained firmly seated in her routine, until the day that Souji Seta transferred to their school...
